FIND A NEED
By Janet Cappiello Blake
IN ITS 17 YEARS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF Louisville,
The Women’s Center has blossomed into an outreach program
for women that stretches off campus and deep into the greater
Louisville community. One of the center’s dedicated volunteers is
Robin R. Harris, the public services librarian and professor of
legal bibliography at the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis
School of Law.
Robin is active in campus groups related to women’s issues and diversity, and, in
2004, after working for two years on UofL’s President’s Commission on the Status
of Women, she wanted to stay involved. She naturally turned to the center.
“It’s one of my passions here at UofL,” said Robin.
In her work on the public relations committee, she promotes the center’s goals of
equality, women’s self-reliance, and the contributions of women in all cultures and
society. In addition to writing the quarterly newsletter, Robin helped found the
Kentucky Women’s Book Festival.
The festival, which just completed its second year, features female Kentucky
authors signing and discussing their works. It is just one example of the Women’s
Center extending its influence into the greater community. “We think that this is
going to be something that catches on,” she said. “What we want is for people to
look forward to it like they do other events in Louisville.”
Volunteering at the Women’s Center rewards itself in the people one meets,
whether it is authors, students, or professors.
“If you are really involved, you get to experience the diversity that is UofL,” said
Robin, who lives in the Highlands with her husband, Ron, and their two dogs.
The center has sponsored or co-sponsored hundreds of activities at UofL and the
surrounding community, including activities to address violence against women;
celebrating Women’s Equality Day (August); and hosting a delegation of women
legislators from Uganda.

SOMETIMES, VOLUNTEERS SEEK OUT THEIR work. Other times, their work finds
them. That was the case for 28-year-old Hollie R. Vaught, a volunteer with
Louisville-based Project Women, Inc., which helps single, homeless mothers
break the cycle of poverty by getting a college education.
A co-worker approached Hollie about volunteering for Project Women. “I wasn’t
sure what the organization was about or what kind of volunteer work I needed to
do,” Hollie said.
But then Hollie, whose own mother is a teacher who raised her children alone
while earning her college degree, talked with Project Women executive director
Cathe Dykstra.
“I immediately felt that this was the organization that I wanted to help succeed in
any way possible,” Hollie said. “My mom is my hero, and she believes that through
education, anything is possible. She knows where the mothers in Project Women
are coming from, and volunteering for Project Women is a way I can also thank
my mom for the principles that she has instilled in me.”
Now, a year and a half later, Hollie is part of Project Women’s Spirit Team, which
coordinates social activities. The team helps the moms and children alike have a
little fun at Mothers’ Day Out events and parties, and offers up little touches like
“Survivor Baskets” to help the moms through finals week.
Hollie, who is assistant vice president/retail operations for 1st Independence
Bank, is a southern Indiana resident and proud mother of 10-month-old Nolan
with her husband, Josh.
