13 Things  She Cannot Live Without

Jo Ross
Fashion consulting, personal shopping, public relations, corporate
fashion seminars, and modeling instruction — such is the life of
freelance fashion guru Jo Ross. Add to that a stint on television,
lots of travel, and the production of trendy fashion shows and
you have a life that is full of style and wit.

Jo operates her fashion headquarters out of her home on five acres of
woods in LaGrange, Ky. Jo talks about those things that are important to
her — family, friends, and furry animals. And of course, fashion.

Family
‘My beloved David Andrew. We met when we worked together at
Louisville Tonite Live. We have been together 15 years. And my
daughter Casey Ross Russell.”

Friends
“There are 15 of us from high school (Waggoner Class of 1964) that get
together every summer and vacation. These are friends who influenced
my life and inspired me to go on to college after graduation. They taught
me manners, to think about others, and added an element of grace to
my life. This year we rented a big house in North Carolina. We have
been to the beach and New York City. We live all over, but still connect
like we have never been apart.
“I also have a friend who is a model. She worked for Eastern Airlines and
when the company needed an events coordinator and someone to
escort travel agents to different locations, she suggested me. For every
24 hours I worked, I got a free trip. I love to travel. I have been to
Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Paris, and Mexico. I love to vacation in the
Caribbean.”

Furry animals
“We have two black Schipperkes. They look like little black foxes without
tails. They can do no wrong. Spencer is five and Casey is two. They
came from an animal rescue center in Cleveland. They already had
names. My daughter Casey teases me that she is permanently scarred.
“Then there was Arnold. For my fortieth birthday, my ex-husband gave
me a black and white Hampshire pig. It was sort of a joke, but I kept
Arnold for thirteen years. He was the size of a couch. I had a house built
for him and a watering trough. He started growing tusks and one grew
and curled back into his gum. The vet cut them off and my friend Clifton
Nicholson designed a pendant from them (Item 4, not pictured). It is very
special to me because of who made them and what they represent.”

Fashion
“I started my career with Byck’s. Thirty years later, I can say that the
fashion business has always been fun. It has been a special privilege to
have opportunities to contribute to an event or project. Currently, I am
working on a costume exhibit for the Kentucky Derby Museum for 2009.
The first will show what was worn or might have been worn to celebrity
parties throughout the years and the second one will feature fourteen
decades of fashion worn to the Derby. I am never bored with fabrics,
mannequins and costumes. It is like a play day for me.”

1.  Hot pink snorkel and mask. “While others may shop or visit museums,
I am visiting aquariums or taking nature walks. Nature really fascinates
me.”
2.  Collection of glass and carved hummingbirds. “I have some that I
bought on a cruise and carved doctor birds (long-tailed hummingbirds)
that my mother gave me. They only live in Jamaica. They are very dear
to my heart.”
3.   Black 2005 Honda Element. “The doors open from the middle out
and it is easy to load clothing, hats and accessories.”
4.  Labraborite pendant necklace with silk braided cord and pendant of
tusk of pet pig Arnold designed by Clifton Nicholson. “The labraborite is
like an opal with blues, greens and yellows. When it moves, it looks like
a storm in the forest.
5.  Black and white hounds tooth shawl and red wool jacket designed by
business partner Bob Stuecker. “Bob designed these pieces 25 years
ago. The jacket has a serape-like front and handkerchief hem. Very
chic.”
6.  Gold Mickey Mouse watch and padparadscha solitaire ring. “The
watch came from Disney’s 20th anniversary celebration for the media at
Disneyworld. They really rolled out the red carpet. The solitaire ring is
an anniversary present from David. It is blazing reddish-orange color the
size of a dime.”
7.   Silk pantsuits. “My uniform. I have them made in colors of iridescent
colors — magenta, cobalt blue. They are lightweight with pockets in the
pants and the jacket. Functional, comfortable all day long, but can be
worn into the evening. They never look wrinkled. They have served me
well.”
8.  Mackie perfume by Bob Mackie. “Bob Mackie was one of my favorite
designers. This is a light fragrance I have worn for years.”
9.  Cross pearls from China. “Summer Eliason designed a choker for me
made out of these pearls that look like crosses.”
10.  Didgeridoo and boomerang from Australia. “Souvenirs from my
travels. The didgeridoo is a long musical instrument used by the
Indigenous Australians.”
11.  Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. “This costs $60 a pound in the
United States and $14 a pound in Jamaica. I buy 20 bags of it when I go
to Jamaica.”
12.  Emergency bag. “It is a black suitcase with red lips all over it. I carry
it in my car. It has extra boobs; fishing line; double sided tape; super
glue; razors; shower curtain (to use as a makeshift dressing room or to
put on a dirty floor); rain ponchos; scissors; safety pins; brushes; hair
spray; makeup and makeup hoods; extension cords; tacks.”
13.  Swimsuit. “I swim two to three times a week with a friend in her pool.
We solve the problems of the world and get exercise at the same time.
My favorite suit is black with an overlay in a  hot purple, orange and
green floral print.”
