Alice J. Schleicher

Alice J. Schleicher, president and founder of Alice J. Schleicher, Inc.
in Louisville and Indiana and AJS Associates in Tennessee and Alabama. Owns a
total of 55 KFC franchise restaurants. Started the company in 1977 with her son Rick
who is a builder and lives in Birmingham.  Alice and husband Richard live on a farm
in Borden, Ind.  Daughter, Kimra, is an attorney and vice president of the companies.
She is:  A very organized person, multi-tasker, friendly and well-disciplined. I get that
from my mother. I put God first and family, business second. I am a great
communicator and tell my managers and employees I am just a phone
call away.

Motto: It’s nice to be important but it is more important to be nice.

Breaks her heart:  Management people that we trained and worked with and they
have fallen by the wayside. I want them to do well. To strive to be better tomorrow.

When she makes a mistake:  I shrug it off and go on. If I hurt someone’s feelings, I
apologize immediately.

Fascinating about the world:  It is not as big as we think it is. That the U.S. is so
wonderful after only 200 years. We are the model but the world doesn’t look at us as
such. And how our leaders have moved us forward.

Pet Peeve:  When people don’t meet deadlines.

Looks up to:  Indira Gandhi. She was told she wouldn’t be able to rule the country (as
Prime Minister of India), but she rose above all that and did a fantastic job. She was
at the top of her game. I loved it.

Least favorite chore:  Dusting furniture.

Movie:  Some Came Running (1958) with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley
MacLaine. Parts of it were filmed in Indiana. I don’t know if I’ve seen a good movie
since then.

Influenced by:  The Bible and Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
And I read books on giving good customer service.

Might be doing:  I have often thought about this. I was an organist in the
church for 15 years, and I have sung for weddings and funerals so I
might be doing that or serving on community boards. I am not a
sit-around person.

Restaurant:  The Palm Restaurant in Nashville and Jeff Ruby’s.

Drives:  A black Jaguar.

Organizational tools:  My agenda book with calendar, names, and phone numbers. I
buy the biggest one I can find. It is covered with yellow Post-It notes. And a clipboard.
When I visit a restaurant, I write down what needs to be done, painted, or repaired.

Must have every day:  A cup of coffee. I like French vanilla.

Collects:  Spoons from all over the country. And jade. I love Hong Kong and have
bought bracelets and other jade pieces there.

Touchstone:  I have a piece of marble on my desk that I bought at an airport gift
shop. I was going through a tough place with the business and this described my
visit: “In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” The quote is by Albert Einstein. It
got my focus back where it needed to be.

Makes her laugh:  Music, playing dominoes. I laugh when people are
happy. That is why I wish we had Christmas all year. It brings people and
families together.

If caught relaxing:  I would be reading or looking over my agenda for the next day.
Soapbox:  When people don’t do what they are supposed to do.
It bothers her:  That young people won’t work today.
Power tools:  I can run the big mixers in the stores and run the cookers.
Scares her:  Strange viruses that make people ill and that no one knows how to treat
or where they come from.
In a crisis:  I stay cool, calm, and collected so I can think.
Life would be simpler:  If, in dealing with people, they would respond and take
accountability for their actions and not point fingers at others.
Vacations:  Hawaii is relaxing. I love Hong Kong.
Top three values:  Character, good work ethic, and ability to communicate.
World would be a better place:  If everyone would be thankful for what they have and
who they are. If they are not satisfied with their life, then get some help to get where
they want to be.
