What Gets Her Through the Day
By Tamera Huber

A furry companion reduces stress at
Susan DeMott’s hectic office.

Susan, president of DeMott Technical
Solutions Inc., an information
technology (IT) outsourcing company
for businesses and homes, brought
her 8-year-old basset hound, Boomer
into the office from home after
Boomer’s companion, Susan and
Kevin DeMott’s 15-year-old basset,
died in November. Boomer adopted
the entire staff and they adopted him.

If the day is challenging, Susan takes
a break and pets Boomer. “The stress
leaves you,” Susan says. “He has a
calming effect.” Boomer’s walks
outside invigorate Susan; she gets
out of the office and clears her head
for a few minutes. “I’m refocused and
energized to return to work,” she says.

Boomer takes refuge underneath
Susan’s desk in a bed that resembles
a couch when he needs a time out from all the attention. “He curls up and goes to sleep,”
Susan says.
