AN ARTS INSIDER MUST-SEE
By Gioia Patton
Beatlemania…Again!
At the Beatles festival on Memorial Day weekend,
I experienced a state of euphoria while listening
to a note-for-note orchestration of the Beatles’ album
Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band so the last thing
I imagined recommending a scant few months later would be another tribute to the Fab
Four. I was wrong. After watching a five-minute DVD highlight of Classical Mystery Tour,
which features original members of the Broadway sensation BEATLEMANIA performing
live in concert with a symphony orchestra, a rush of emotions best described as gotta be
there, gonna be there!’ sprang up all over again. Yesterday,
I Saw Her Standing There, Sgt. Pepper, All You Need Is Love to Imagine, it’s all there,
which makes, I think, the Classical Mystery Tour one of the ultimate uber Beatles’ fan
experiences. If for nothing else than because the orchestra performs all the specific
Beatles songs that were originally recorded with an orchestral arrangement.
Oh yes, the four guys even dress the part too...from the early Beatles suits, to the Sgt.
Pepper outfits, and finally the Abbey Road period vests and longer hair.
Critical praises for Classical Mystery Tour, which has done tour dates since 1996, include
a high goose-bump quotient, and more than just an incredible simulation.
— Los Angeles Times
“CLASSICAL MYSTERY TOUR is the most devoted, musical, clever and respectful
recreation of the music of the Beatles on the symphony stage today. For those of us for
whom the Beatles were a constant source of awestruck inspiration and fun, this show is
amazing visually, and stunning musically. I’ve worked with them on several occasions,
love the show more each time, and I recommend it to anyone for whom the Beatles hold a
special place.”
— Bob Bernhardt, The Louisville Orchestra’s Principal Pops Conductor
