Networking Lessons
By Tamera Huber
An unexpected networking opportunity at her first job three years ago threw Jen Pitts
into panic mode. Jen was new on her first job at Guthrie Mayes Public Relations when
Jack Guthrie asked her to attend Business First’s 40 Under 40 celebration.
Jen, now 24, campaign manager for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and
manager of the Light the Night Walk (Oct. 9), was “ecstatic” that Guthrie asked her to go
when someone canceled. “Then panic set in because I wasn’t prepared.” She had
arrived at work “not looking my best,” she says. An embarrassed Jen “had to scurry
home to change and get ready” then meet everyone else at the event.
“It was a great experience,” Jen said about her first networking attempts. She met
several business contacts with whom she has since built professional relationships.
Now, Jen keeps makeup and accessories at the office in case “something comes up that
I didn’t foresee.” She says, “I learned a valuable lesson that day. Always be prepared.
You never know what to expect.”
