What She Does: Kristie Wetterer plays volleyball for the University of Louisville team,
practicing up to 20 hours per week. “We train all year round,” she said. Since the season
is in the fall, the team begins practicing in August. In January, the hours are reduced to
eight hours per week, then picks up again in March. “Most people go home for the
summer, but since I live here, I can work out five days a week, about one and a half
hours a day, or play with my sister, who plays on the Bellarmine team.”
HOW SHE DOES IT Kristie’s mother and two aunts played volleyball for the University of
Louisville, so it’s “in the family,” Kristie said. She began playing volleyball at around age
three, in the backyard with her twin sister, Katie, and joined a team in the fifth grade.
After playing other sports, she knew that volleyball was for her when she got to high
school and had to choose between it and her other favorite sport, soccer. “I like
volleyball because it’s quick-paced, and I liked the people that were involved.”
BENEFIT “Staying healthy and in shape. I love being part of a team and part of the
University of Louisville Athletics. I’m on the board of the Student Advisory Committee, so I
get to do a lot of neat things with that.”
ADVICE “There are tons of leagues for all levels, and in the summer there are beach
(sand) leagues. Go for it and don’t be scared if you mess up, because everyone does in
the beginning. Just be patient, work hard at it, and have fun. If you’re having fun,
everything else will follow.” PHOTO COURTESY UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
