My friends and family were so supportive “My husband
could not have been better. He was always there
supporting me, pushing me, and listening.
There were some social functions that he needed to do
because of his job, and I didn’t think I was presentable
to go in public. But he kind of protected me… I knew
people were there who wanted to say something, but he
put everybody at ease when we would walk into a
situation. He would say, ‘I’d like to introduce my wife,
Brenda. She just got out of the hospital, and isn’t she a
trouper for being out here?’ Then he would take the
conversation somewhere else, like the weather and
kept moving it along. He got it out in the open and
done, because people knew anyway, but this is how we
could move on.”
BRENDA TUCKSON, 58
14-year survivor
Seamstress and owner
of FabriCreate.
Other help came from…“You know sometimes you’re having a
really yucky day. With my treatment, I hadn’t been at my job long
enough to qualify for FMLA, so I couldn’t take any time off
without fear of losing my job, and if you lose your job, you lose
your insurance, so my work was very helpful as far as working
with me and my schedule so (after my chemo treatment) I could
recover on a long weekend. But most of all, the nursing staff at
Norton (Cancer Institute) and Dr. Seeger’s office… anytime I had
any questions or concerns, they were there, very helpful and
always willing to give a hug. There is a nurse there — and  isn’t
it horrible that I don’t know her name, but I know her lovely face.
Actually this one particular person — and the staff, if I saw them
out, they would ask, ‘how are you doing?’ sincerely. I knew I
could call them for anything.”

one-year survivor
Administrative Assistant, UPS–SCS
Now that I'm a survivor...“I teach a ‘Look Good…Feel
Better’ class through the American Cancer Society and
teach at Baptist East Cancer Research center. I also
volunteer for Friends for Life.  It makes you feel better
to talk about it and let people know that (medical
research has) come so far in 12 years, from when I first
had it to now, and there are so many more survivors.”
