ROSE BREWER

handle clerical duties, and translate for the Spanish-speaking
population.”

of being needed.”

DANESE R. CALEY
Volunteer for Center for Women and Families
WHAT SHE DOES: “I am a hospital advocate. I go to
Louisville and Indiana hospitals to advocate for victims of
sexual assault and domestic violence. My job is to offer services
and support as well as comfort in times of crisis.”
WHY SHE BECAME INVOLVED: “I wanted to give my time and support to
men, women and children in incredibly difficult circumstances. I believe in a world
where people can resolve conflict without their fists, children
are free to be children, and women can walk without fear or self-doubt.”
WHY IT MATTERS: “One in three women will be assaulted in their lifetime. Half of
those women will tell their stories. Some will die, some will live lives marked by
emotional and physical abuse and some will change. Volunteers provide a
reserve for people to draw on in all of those times.”
HER DEFINING MOMENT: “I was called out at 2 a.m. to a hospital. When I arrived,
the police were interviewing a young woman who
had been sexually assaulted. She was terrified when I walked in,
but our eyes connected and I knew why I was there.”Danese is wearing: Susana
Monoco shell, $65; Diane von Furstenberg dress, $425; Cynthia Vincent shoes,
$346; earrings, $76. All items available at Circe, 3630 Brownsboro Road, (502)
894-0095.
NANETTE BONTE

WHAT SHE DOES: “I (along with Marcie Bean) teach girls different crafts.”
WHY SHE BECAME INVOLVED: “I love working with children. I feel giving back to
your community is very important. I will continue to volunteer until I can’t
anymore…love it!”
HER DEFINING MOMENT: “Hearing about these girls’ lives and realizing they all
have
troubled lives, I then realized
that just being there teaching
them something fun brought smiles to their faces.
It’s priceless! Nanette is wearing: Clara S. blouse, $39; Lauren Vidal pants, $139;
Solar Rings necklace, $48; Solar Rings earrings, $32. All items available

BECKI WINCHEL
Part-time employee with Coalition for the Homeless and volunteers for
Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political
Repression, The Fairness Campaign and Animal Gambill’s
Critter Crusade. WHAT SHE DOES: Becki is a poverty simulation coordinator.
“The object of a poverty simulation is to sensitize the participants to the stark
realities low-income people face every day.”
WHY SHE BECAME INVOLVED: “As is the case with many non-profits, the
Coalition was short-staffed
and in need of volunteers.
I participated in the first community action poverty simulation and was
offered the position of coordinator thereafter.”
WHY IT MATTERS: “What I’ve learned volunteering with these organizations is
that anyone can create change… our greatest purpose in life is to be here for
each other.”
HER DEFINING MOMENT: “Seeing how much pride it gives them (the homeless) in
knowing you are helping
them take care of themselves… it’s what they want.”
Becki is wearing: Carrie Allen top, $89; Clara S. pants $69; earrings, $19;
watch,$49; bracelet, $25. All items available at Priddy
