AN ARTS INSIDER MUST-SEE

PILOBOLUS
astonish: v. to fill with wonder; amaze.
— Webster’s Dictionary
The word astonish appears at least once in almost every
review I read about this modern dance troupe, currently
in the midst of its 36th season.
The physical vocabularies of Pilobolus works are not drawn from traditions of codified
dance movement but are invented — emerging from intense periods of improvisation
and creative play.
At this year’s Annual Academy Award ceremonies held in February, Pilobolus’ six brief
performances stopped the show; and I agree whole-heartedly with wowed Kodak
Theatre audiences, who reacted with rapturous ohhhs and ahhhs!
The following thoughts came to my mind while viewing a DVD with highlights of nine
Pilobolus dances: Weightlessness, flexibility, sensuality, strength, hypnotic, acrobatics.
