Anne Jewell is a Batty Woman
By Lucy M. Pritchett • Photos by Ewa Wojtkowska
Anne Jewell, 41, is executive director of the Louisville
Slugger Museum & Factory. She and husband Tom Crays
have a 5-year-old son, Joseph. Who she is: I am a
grownup tomboy, Mid-western gal, mother, and wife.
Astrological sign: Virgo. We are regarded as
perfectionists; known as nit-pickers. But we are also very l
loyal and creative.
Office touchstone: A painting by my brother of a ball
diamond in a park across the street from where we grew
up in Toledo. It reminds me what really matters. That and
a picture of my son Joe.
Baseball team: New York Yankees.
Favorite museum piece: Babe Ruth’s bat with the notches carved in it for every home
run he hit in 1927, the year he hit 60 home runs.
Organizational tool:The trash can.
Breaks her heart: Children in need.
Influential book: Catcher in the Rye. Each time I read it, it has a different meaning for
me. And I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter books.
Heroes: My mom and dad.
Fascinates her about the world: The commonalities of people around the world. Children
and families — you can look at someone’s face and tell what is going on.
Pet peeve: Typos.
Least favorite chore: Paying the bills.
Doing in 1991: I was a television and radio reporter in South Bend, Ind. at WNDU. I was
just breaking into news.
Movie: Sound of Music
First crush: New York Yankees shortstop Bucky Dent. I had a poster of him on my
bedroom wall.
Would be doing: I would be a stay-at-home mom or a writer.
Sports: I was the only girl with three brothers. My family was interested in sports in
general. I played second base in softball.
Makes her laugh: My husband’s dry wit can crack me up. And the TV show The Office is
a must-see.
Louisville restaurant: The Come Back Inn. Their specials are different and really good.
Nowadays, though, it is any McDonald’s that has an indoor Playland.
Car: 1996 blue Toyota Corolla. It’s a stick shift with 115,000 miles.
Motto: From Satchel Paige — “Dance like nobody’s watching.”
Favorite time of day: Putting my son to bed, being goofy, reading to him at the end of
the day.
Artists: My brother Patrick Jewell who lives in Brooklyn. Matisse, Dega.
Ethnic food: A good Chinese buffet.
Buys clothes: Dillard’s, Kohl’s, TJ Maxx. I used to love to shop but it is not a priority any
more.
Gourmet treat: My husband’s Scotch eggs. Hardboiled eggs wrapped in sausage, rolled
in a batter and deep fried. Served with mustard and dark beer.
Spiritual practice: Prayer — there is power to it.
Favorite pen: A wooden pen that says “Slugger Queen” and has the New York Yankees
logo on it.
Movie that made her cry: Brian’s Song
She relaxes: Kicked back in the family room with my feet up drinking a beer watching TV
or looking through celebrity magazines.
Favorite Louisville area: Downtown.
Votes: Religiously. It is a family passion. It is a duty and an honor.
Family keepsake: A hand-carved Madonna that I have carried with me all the places I
have lived since college. I just learned recently that it was the first gift my father gave to
my mother which gives it a whole new meaning for me.
Places she’s lived: South Bend, New Albany, Toledo, Granville (Ohio), Winston-Salem;
Dublin, Ireland, Toledo, South Bend, Louisville.
Where she would live: New Albany.
Odd job: When I lived in Dublin I worked as a Kelly Girl and met lots of different people. I
also had a job there delivering kissing telegrams, but it was really very innocent.
Soapbox: Apathy, bigotry, and poor customer service.
Not apathetic about: Family, education, and health.
Best advice: Received from Mom – “No one else can make you happy.”
Secret passions: Yard sales and celebrity magazines.
Creative outlet: Making Halloween costumes. Unfortunately, that only comes around
once a year so I tend to go a bit overboard.
Most unusual office décor: I have a great office next to a huge window overlooking the
Big Bat. Certain times of the year the sun is pretty bright so I break out my big blue and
white beach umbrella and plop it across my desk to block the sun. If the glare is still bad
I’ll put on sunglasses so I can keep working on my computer.
Favorite room in her house: Our family room. It’s the heart of our home. It’s light and
warm with a great view of the woods behind us.
Favorite part of the job: Catching a natural moment with a visitor where they are
delighted to be with us. I can see that they aren’t going to forget being here.
Baseball movie: Bull Durham.
Baseball book: The most recent was Fantasyland (by Sam Walker) about fantasy
baseball leagues.
Most recent purchase: A dress and some big silver hoop earrings for a special event at
the Ted Williams Museum in Florida.
Jump-starts her day: A cold splash of water on my face. If I have time, I swim at the
YMCA downtown.
Childhood dream: To be an actress on Broadway.
Still hasn’t gotten the knack of: All the little technology things. I do have a cell phone, but
just recently memorized the number for it.
Latest professional project: Deep renovation planning at the museum.
Latest personal project: To get organized with my paperwork. It is all in piles.
Baseball celebrities met: Derek Jeter, Roger Clemons, Stan Musial. They are all very
gracious.
Fifteen minutes to herself: I would do nothing.
On the future: I found out I was pregnant with Joe on 9/11.
I was so thrilled on the one hand and so devastated on the other. Every mother thinks
about what kind of world she is bringing her child into. That question is big in my heart,
but I try to have faith that good will prevail.
The world would be a better place…
… if it was easier to adopt children and more people were open to adopting kids of all
ages. We’re looking to adopt now. I hope it happens.
Words to live by: “I’ll think about that tomorrow.”
