WHAT SHE DOES In the last seven years, Jenny has won 10 of the 28
contests she entered and was named 2006 Figure Olympia Champion, which is like
the Super Bowl of the figure competition world. Jenny’s physique has graced the
covers of 10 national magazines. Keeping her body buff has become an obsession.
The goal of a figure competitor is to have a V-shaped body with bigger shoulders and
back, tapering down to a very small waist. At 5 feet 5 inches tall and 135 pounds,
Jenny’s routine includes weight training up to five days a week plus 45 minutes of
cardiovascular workouts up to six days a week. But for 16 weeks before a contest,
Jenny increases weight training to six days a week and does at least two hours a day
of cardio. During the intense preparation, she carefully weighs and measures
everything she eats until she drops to 125 pounds. Her waist shrivels to 23 1 /2
inches, “but it’s only there for a couple of days,” she said with a laugh. While training,
her diet mostly consists of lean proteins, vegetables, and low glycemic carbs. Even
for Jenny, the dieting is a challenge. “By the end of the four months, I’m done,” she
said.
HOW SHE GOT STARTED Always a competitor, Jenny competed nationally as a
high school cheerleader, then later in aerobics. One day she watched a friend
compete in a women’s body building contest, and thought she would like to try it.
After one competition, Jenny was hooked.
BENEFITS As well as the physical benefits Jenny reaps as a result of her training,
she loves that it makes her feel empowered. “Just to know that you have that control
over how your body looks and feels—I feel strong.” She said it also helps with body
image and self esteem.
A benefit she didn’t expect became the love of motivating and inspiring others. “When
I got started, I was motivated by people that I saw, and now I’m that person.”
