Meet Kelli Flint Campbell. With a smile and a firm handshake she welcomes you to her
salon and spa. Here, behind closed doors, bewitching facials and massages are being
performed with scented lotions and magical potions. In another area, stylists wielding
scissors and blow-dryers are adding glamour and luster to the women relaxing in swivel
chairs.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a woman who ensures that women look good has a
beautiful life.
Hers is a world of beauty, for sure. Kelli, owner of Joseph’s Spa and Salon, comes from
a family of hairdressers although her days are not spent ‘behind the chair.’ From her
private, light-filled office, with its built-in cabinets and shelves to keep clutter at bay,
she runs her successful salon which was started by her father in 1971.
“I took my dad’s vision and evolved it into the twenty-first century,” she says. “Women
today are so incredibly busy; we need a bit of time to ourselves. I like to think of us
here as day-makers. Small things can make a big difference. A good haircut; time for a
pedicure on a busy day. What that does for women mentally is pretty important.”
So what is a day-maker for Kelli?
“Taking extra time with my kids (she and husband Matt have Stella James, 3 and
Joseph Huck, 1). Walking in Cherokee Gardens. Monday morning breakfast together.
Even time spent coloring with them for just a few minutes gives me a better perspective
on how little things make a difference to them. It makes me a better person.”
But capturing those moments is not easy. Even though Kelli finds cleaning, ironing,
and organizing closets therapeutic, “I am learning to delegate at home. It is okay to
have someone help me with the housecleaning. And, I have a nanny two days a week
to stay with the children and run errands.”
When it comes to shopping for herself, Kelli heads off to local businesses in her white
Mercedes SUV. She prefers to patronize other small businesses such as Clodhoppers,
although she does sometimes shop online at Neiman Marcus and Saks. “I think it is
important to find places to shop that are a small business like I am. I look for modern
but classic clothes. I don’t spend my money on anything too trendy.”
Simple and classic is also to be found in Kelli’s home and office décor. At home,
antiques and art deco furniture gleefully mix with each other. In her office, an oriental
rug from Frances Lee Jaspers, and an antique French cabinet supply warmth and a
taste of luxury.
Kelli credits her parents for teaching her about a beautiful life. “My dad (now
deceased) taught me about appreciating the finer things in life. Good food, antiques,
what makes a German sports car so luxurious. Even though he came from a rural
background, he had a sense of aesthetics.”
Kelli’s mom, who works at the salon, “has an innate sense of style. She knows classic
style in dress and in hair. Her technical skills may be different from what is taught
today, but her hands move effortlessly when she is styling. And the finished product is
always pretty. No hard edges.”
Kelli says a gourmet treat for her is chocolate chip marshmallows, from Whole Foods.
Her favorite restaurant? “Jack Fry’s. I love the swordfish and the Brie salad.”
While enjoying a yummy marshmallow, what does Kelli ponder?
“That the world would be a more beautiful place if we could learn to love and
appreciate ourselves.”

Flint Campbell relaxes
in one of a pair of Art Deco chairs “that are the only pieces we have bought since we
moved into the house a year and a half ago.” She had them recovered in soothing
colors of gold, blue and green.
Fashion:Prada shoes (above) and a small Gucci messenger bag (below) epitomize
Kelli Campbell’s insistence on classic and well-made fashion items. “The bag is a great
on-the-go purse. I can load it with cell phone and wallet, sling it across my chest, and I
am ready for hands-free travel.” Whether that be to the grocery store or the Garden
Store.
Some of her recent splurges: “A Marc Jacobs handbag with big pockets. I can carry my
laptop and a diaper. Also, a pair of Prada, black-patent leather platform wedges. I like
good shoes and good handbags that will stand the test of time.”
Architecture:The patio is a work-in-progress. Not happy with the
look of modern fabricated pavers and cobblestones, Kelli had
the patio built of old bricks from razed buildings in Louisville.
Some to-be-added features: copper pots filled with trees and
a comfy couch with two chairs. “I envision it as an extension of
the house.” A few rabbits from her collection have escaped and
live on the patio. They are very well behaved.
Beauty:Since Joseph’s Salon & Spa features only products by Aveda, it stands to
reason that Kelli’s beauty regime is simple. Her new perfume choice: Yantra. “It is a
woodsy, earthy fragrance.
Lip gloss: Papaya. “It is the new coral.” Beautifying oil: a mixture
of lavender and jojoba. “It is so gentle you can use it for
everything from removing eye makeup to softening your skin.”
