Ready to Change Your Life?
By Shannon White
It seems everywhere you turn there is a new
diet craze — cabbage soup detox, breakfast for
dinner, nonfat, no meat, low carbs, and so on.
And then, there is the equally frustrating exercise
dilemma — two hours of cardio, no cardio and all strength training, no weights
and all yoga, or some combination of all of them.
So, we set out to find four women who are willing to eat healthfully and exercise
regularly and see what happens. This journey is as much for the readers of
Today’s Woman, as it is for this writer. And since we have been confused for
years, we have decided to try “Keep it simple, sweetheart” to see if this
approach works.
We recruited volunteers for this experiment through a mention in our
September issue and received an onslaught of responses. Out of the
countless emails, we selected four amazing women, ready to tell it all, eat right
and get moving.
Home Cuisine, a local home delivery meal service, has been gracious enough
to provide four months’ worth of delicious and healthful food to our participants
at no cost. Sandy Pike, owner, is an amazing chef and, as the previous owner
of Jack Fry’s, she knows how to infuse flavor into food. All three meals total
1,200 calories a day and complete the daily recommendations for fruit and
vegetables.
In addition, the YMCA of Louisville, Milestone Wellness Center, FITLIFE, and
St. Matthews Martial Arts and Pilates have each agreed to train and motivate a
woman through her fitness routines.
Shannan McGuire is a 53-year-old nutrition teacher at Eastern High School
who wants to lose the 10 pounds she has gained each year over the past four
years.
Marla Bright is a 51-year-old paralegal who hopes to finally shed the 60
pounds she gained when her daughter was born 28 years ago.
Sasha Briseno is a 33-year-old stay-at-home mom of Alejandro and feels like
she is a fit woman trapped in an overweight woman’s body. She has
recently lost 50 pounds but needs the motivation to lose another 50 pounds.
Shanion Thurman is 39 years old and dreams of completing the Derby Festival
Mini-Marathon in April 2008. She wants to lose 50 pounds before Race Day.
Each month, through March, we will publish updates on all four women’s
challenges and successes. Stay tuned!
