fitness: Janet Green
by Cheryl Stuck
Janet Green AGE: 54
Teacher Gilmore Lane Elementary
What She Does: Janet Green loves playing tennis on a team,
running at least an hour a day, and biking with a club. Although
she doesn’t like to swim, on August 26, Janet will compete in the
Ford Ironman Louisville triathlon, swimming 2.4 miles in the Ohio
River, biking 112 miles, and running 26.2 miles. It will be her first
ironman competition, although she has participated in many
triathlons and a couple of “half-irons.” When not training, she still
manages to play tennis, run, and bike.
How She Got Started: Janet played tennis for about 12 years, and seven years ago,
a couple of women on her team convinced her to join them in a running competition. She
won a month of fitness classes, “so since I’m a teacher, I did the classes in June. They had
a running group and talked me into going to that about three and a half years ago, then
the group changed over to tri’s (triathlons). It just sort of developed…” Janet said. “To do
the triathlon, you have to do swimming. I don’t like to swim, so as soon as this is over, I won’
t swim again until I have to do it again.”
Benefits: “After losing 45 pounds, I found out that if I exercise one hour a day, seven days
and replaced soft drinks with water and do minimal changes, like skipping the pudding at
lunch, I can maintain a decent weight. I have more energy, better health, and feel it’s a
good role model for my children. I also enjoy the social aspect.”
Advice: “Join a group or program to get started and start slowly. Find knowledgeable
people to mentor you that you enjoy being with. You don’t have to compete, just have a
good time.”
