Impressions: Etiquette for Today
By Barbara Bryant
Questions and answers to life's everyday quandries:
Annoying Airline Behavior
We have all experienced it, and I would venture to say that most of us have extended it.
Rudeness and frustration at some level during air travel. Flying in today’s world of security
checks, delays, and cancellations wreaks havoc on our nerves and patience.
Share the armrest space. If you sit in the middle seat, it doesn’t mean you have the right
to use both armrests.
When you get up, do not use the back of the seat in front of you as a handle.
If the seat next to you is occupied, do not use it as a pillow, an armrest, or leg rest unless
it is occupied by your significant other.
Don’t spend ten minutes trying to force your luggage into an overhead bin. If you suspect
it is not going to fit, check it. If it is too heavy for you to lift, don’t expect someone else to
help you lift it up.
Chew your food with your mouth closed.
Try using the bathroom before boarding the plane. This may eliminate the need to use the
bathroom while in the air. If you must go, and you are not in an aisle seat, try not to wait
until the other person in the row is asleep to decide to go the bathroom.
Always show respect to flight attendants. Use the call button only when absolutely
necessary. When boarding greet them with a “hello” and when leaving, a smile and a
“thank you.” It will not only make you feel good but will surely bring a smile to his or her
face.
Don’t rearrange other people’s luggage in the overhead bin in order to accommodate
yours.
Respect your fellow passengers’ privacy. They may not wish to engage in conversation. If
you ask a question and you find the answer to be brief or you receive no response or
commentary, take a hint.
It can be difficult flying with kids. Be prepared with books, coloring books, DVDs, anything
to help keep them occupied, so as not to disturb the other passengers.
