Her Story: Liz Langford, 29, of Lyndon
and enrollment and match support
specialist for Big Brothers & Big Sisters, didn’t know that a simple change in hair color
could instantly transform her look. “I’ve had my hair streaked, but I never went all the way
before,” she said. Shea Brown, owner of Shea’s Coiffure (536 Baxter Avenue, 502-581-
0401) brought Liz’s true beauty to the surface effortlessly.
The Solution: For richness and depth, Brown used a neutral dark-brown color and added
long layers to give the hair volume and shape. Next, she used a blow dryer to straighten
the hair and a flat iron to give it shine and body.
For her face, Rhoda C. Overstreet, business manager for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics
(Oxmoor Center), strived for naturalness. She used steel and bone eyeshadow ($19) and
graphite gel eyeliner ($18). She also applied no-smudge black mascara ($20) to make
the eyes pop. Overstreet finished her look with chocolate lip liner ($20) and rose gold lip
gloss ($19).
“I loved the cut because it gave my hair some flow and bounce.”

Styling Tip: African American women who
choose not to use a chemical relaxer, should
wrap it at night with either a satin scarf or
bonnet to lock in moisture and sheen.
Shampoo the hair every two weeks, to keep it
from looking dry and frizzy. Apply a light oil
(Paul Mitchell Shine, $17) so that the hair can
maintain body and movement.
